It has been a very long and brutal winter here in Madison, Wisconsin. We thought the snow would never stop falling. But hallelujah, it finally did, and with the warm weather comes the need to cool your house for the summer. Is your AC unit up for another hot summer? Or is it time for an upgrade? Our team at Abner Boiler & Heating Company has put together a checklist to help you decide whether to tune up your unit or say goodbye to make room for something new.
Is your air conditioner more than 10 years old?
Generally, if you take good care of your air conditioner and get it serviced regularly, you can expect it to last about 15 years. However, if your unit is 10 or more years old, it may start to require more services, and therefore starts to make more financial sense to replace it. Also, if you have an older unit, it’s important to consider the advancements that have been made in air conditioning efficiency in the past decade; upgrading may save you money in the long run.
Does your air conditioner use R 22 Freon?
The federal government is phasing out the use of Freon in order to conserve energy, and because of this, the cost of Freon is rising. If you’re having major problems with your air conditioner, especially if they involve the need for more Freon, it’s probably a good idea to replace your unit now.
Is your home uncomfortable?
Does it seem like you can’t keep your home cool no matter how hard you try? This could be a sign of an aging air conditioner or even an incorrectly sized system. Regardless of the cause, you want your air conditioner to do its job! If your current unit isn’t keeping you cool and comfortable, then it is time to upgrade to one that will.
